Posted By Administration, Monday, August 19, 2013
Get your spindles ready and fire up your favorite spinning wheel! The National NeedleArts Association (TNNA) Spinning & Weaving Group (SWG) has officially announced they are hosting a community-wide event, Spinzilla, during National Spinning and Weaving Week Oct 7-13, 2013.

Teams will be hosted by TNNA and SWG wholesale, retail and affiliate members. They will compete in team challenges to see who can spin the most yarn in a one-week period. A team trophy, prizes and bragging rights will go to the winning Spinzilla team.

Spinners interested in joining will be able to sign up for a team now through Sept. 23 at for a $10 fee. Part of the proceeds will go to support spinning education through The Needle Arts Mentoring Program (NAMP).

"Spinzilla’s inaugural event is meant to bring people together to spin as much as possible, inspire spinners to challenge themselves to try new skills, and raise money for NAMP,” notes Rita Petteys, Chair of Spinzilla and owner of Grandville, MI-based Yarn Hollow. "We are planning for a fun event that continues to expand enthusiasm for the fiber arts, and we look forward to as many people participating as possible.”

Spinzilla is designed to bring together new and experience spinners to:

• Collectively spin as much yarn as possible during Spinning and Weaving Week.

• Raise awareness of hand spinning in the yarn market and beyond.

• Increase spinning confidence and knowledge to consumers.

• Participate in various challenges designed to increase awareness.

• Establish a spinning component with the Needle Arts Mentoring Program (NAMP), supporting educating children in the needlearts.
