Get your spindles ready and fire
up your favorite spinning wheel! The National
NeedleArts Association (TNNA) Spinning & Weaving Group (SWG)
has officially announced they are hosting a community-wide event, Spinzilla,
Spinning and Weaving Week Oct 7-13, 2013
Teams will be hosted by TNNA and
SWG wholesale, retail and affiliate members. They will compete in team
challenges to see who can spin the most yarn in a one-week period. A team
trophy, prizes and bragging rights will go to the winning Spinzilla team.
Spinners interested in joining
will be able to sign up for a team now through Sept. 23 at Spinzilla.org for a $10 fee. Part of the
proceeds will go to support spinning education through The Needle Arts Mentoring Program
"Spinzilla’s inaugural event is
meant to bring people together to spin as much as possible, inspire spinners to
challenge themselves to try new skills, and raise money for NAMP,” notes Rita
Petteys, Chair of Spinzilla and owner of Grandville, MI-based Yarn Hollow. "We
are planning for a fun event that continues to expand enthusiasm for the fiber
arts, and we look forward to as many people participating as possible.”
Spinzilla is designed to bring together
new and experience spinners to:
• Collectively spin as much yarn as
possible during Spinning and Weaving Week.
• Raise awareness of hand spinning in
the yarn market and beyond.
• Increase spinning confidence and
knowledge to consumers.
• Participate in various challenges
designed to increase awareness.
• Establish a spinning component with
the Needle Arts Mentoring Program (NAMP), supporting educating children in the
