Teachers: Tips for making the most of Meet the Teacher

Posted By Stacey Trock, Fresh Stitches, Monday, December 7, 2015

Meet the Teacher is a fantastic opportunity to gain exposure by meeting and chatting with store owners who are looking to bring teachers into their shops. The event takes place on Friday evening from 5:30 – 7:00 pm in the Ballroom.

Think of the event as speed dating between teachers and LYS owners. You may only have a few seconds to make an impression… a positive impression that may translate into booking a gig later on!

How do you make the most of this opportunity? Here are a few tips.

Perfect your elevator pitch

How would you describe yourself in a few seconds? What are your teaching strengths? Areas of specialty? What sets you apart?

It takes hard work to distill a lifetime of experience into a few short sentences, but it’s work that’s worth doing. Articulately conveying your strengths will likely perk up an LYS owner’s ears… and convince them to stick around to hear more!

Create a tidy take-home message

Shop owners are flooded with information at the show. And in general, their focus is on inventory. They’re bringing in new yarn lines, watching their budget and restocking notions and needles.

Ensure you won’t be forgotten by handing out paperwork that LYSOs can reference when they return home. In addition to a business card or postcard with your contact information, consider distributing a summary of your course offerings or a sample handout from one of your most popular classes.

Focus on a shop-friendly angle

You may have lots of experience teaching at national events or a local community college. But classes at an LYS often have a slightly different flavor. For an LYS owner to commit to hiring you, they need to feel confident that their clientele will be interested enough in your event to cover your teaching fee and travel costs.

When constructing your course offerings, keep these practicalities at the front of your mind. Can you combine your class with a book signing? Cluster together a couple of classes for a full day’s schedule? Rearrange some of your popular topics into an all-day workshop? The easier an LYSO can envision bringing you into the shop, the more likely you are to be booked!

Email list

Consider putting out a piece of paper to collect the email addresses of LYS owners who are interested in hearing about your new course offerings!

Bring samples... or whatever will attract looks!

Your Meet the Teacher reservation includes a table… make the most of it! Display sample class projects to give folks something to come over and look at. Set out your handouts/brochures for display. Or set out a few mints. Anything that invites folks to linger so you can engage in conversation to share what you’re about!

Meeting store owners face to face is your best opportunity to infect them with your enthusiasm for your subject matter. Use this event to make an impression!
