The Power of Inspiration: 2017 CYC Research Results

The Craft Yarn Council launched a survey in October 2017 to gauge where the knitting and crocheting industry is situated and how much social media is having an impact on the industry. See some of the results below. 

The survey was taken among 3,588 individuals who classified themselves as knitters or crocheters. Respondents ranged in age from 18 to over 55, but the majority of respondents (56%) were 55 or older. The regional breakdown of respondents was:

  • Northeast: 22%
  • Southeast: 23%
  • Midwest: 30%
  • West: 11%
  • Northwest: 6%
  • Southwest: 8%

Other results of the survey found that among all age groups, the majority of respondents found inspiration for projects on social media, followed by yarn company websites. Other areas that were surveyed include social media usage and frequency of purchasing yarn in a store vs. online.
