#NeedleStoresoftheWorld: JuJu Knits

By: TNNA Editor

Local Yarn Store Day is THIS Saturday! We're celebrating by highlighting our first-ever traveling store: Fort Worth's JuJu Knits.

Describe what JuJu Knits does best.

Owner Julie “JuJu” Fairley loves both knitting and a tight-knit community. That’s why she has called Fort Worth home for over 30 years. It’s also why she started JuJu Knits to serve as a gathering place for needle artists near her.

What makes JuJu Knits unique?

JuJu Knits officially began on World Wide Knit in Public Day in 2018 with about 30 people gathered in the courtyard of a small bakery/inn in Fort Worth, Texas. After nine months of beginners classes, pop-up shopping events, cancer non-profit partnerships and "Stitch & Sips," we opened Purl — a pink and white, vintage Roadmaster camper from the 1960s. The mobile yarn shop debuted at a neighborhood street festival on April 7 and is now popping up several times a month throughout the community. The 14-foot trailer will rotate our carefully curated yarn stash to appeal to a variety of fiber lovers, from beginners looking for affordable, washable skeins to more sophisticated stitchers seeking indie-dyed hanks or specialty kits. Purl also carries a variety of needles, accessories, and specially commissioned notions and bags that feature pink campers, turquoise hearts and our "Binding Community" tagline. Owner Fairley's dream is to eventually offer a brick-and-mortar shop that truly binds fiber friends. A gathering place, where people put down their phones to connect with each other in person to talk and to share, all while learning to work with yarn, so they can grow, create and heal — just as I believe working with yarn healed me after the lost of my mother to cancer almost 21 years ago.

Share a fun fact about your store.

Little ones, including my 10-year-old niece and 6-year-old nephew, initially called me JuJu. Now, just about the whole town does, including my nearly 75-year-old father who is battling cancer in South Carolina.
