Hooray for NeedleArts! TNNA Summer Trade Show celebrates the industry Playing off a Hollywood theme, this semi-annual trade show and educational weekend event was a win for needlearts retailers, distributors, designers and teachers.

ZANESVILLE, OH — The National NeedleArts Association (TNNA) once again held its annual Summer Trade Show event at the Greater Columbus (OH) Convention Center. From June 22-24, with some meetings and classes taking place June 20 and a special Friday night event June 21, professionals from the needlearts disciplines of knit, crochet, needlepoint, counted thread and embroidery and spinning and weaving gathered to network, learn, see what’s new and — in the case of retailer members — place orders for their shops.

For the second year in a row, the trend of a stronger economy was evident. "Attendees are seeing what they like and are spending their money, not holding back as much as they had in years past,” observes TNNA Executive Director Patty Parrish. "It’s definitely been positive.”

The Friday Retailers’ Luncheon featured Bob Negen, a marketing consultant with WhizBang! Training, who provided attendees with a plethora of sales and marketing tips tailored to their needs. Highlighting the Market’s overall Hollywood theme, that evening’s "NeedleArts Walk of Fame” event encompassed the Sample IT! cash-and-carry mini-show, a Meet the Teacher area, the Needlepoint Showcase and a Manufacturers Rep Meetup — all set against the backdrop of a reception featuring such movie concession treats as popcorn and candy. The Spinning & Weaving Group’s "Spinzilla” event was also previewed during the reception, with Cat Bordhi demonstrating an entertaining (and aerobic!) way to spin fiber. The evening’s festivities were topped off by the Red Carpet Runway Fashion Show, featuring the latest trends in knit and crochet garments.

On Saturday, the trade show floor was opened in grand style, with singing and dancing of a medley of "Hooray for NeedleArts” tunes. That evening’s festivities, "The Stars Come Out Tonight!”, included the unveiling of some of the results of TNNA’s latest industry survey by India Hart Wood, Hart Business Research, as well as the presentation of the Tribute to Excellence in NeedleArts (TEN) Award to Jim Bryson, Bryson Distributing, and the announcements of the winners of the third annual Business Innovation Awards.

"What a wonderful job TNNA does at getting the speakers and suppliers relevant to our industry,” notes Michele Stratton, owner of the Flaming Ice Cube, a knit shop and cafe in Boardman, OH. As a small-business veteran who has attended many restaurant and gift industry trade events over the years, Stratton says she has attended three TNNA trade shows and by far, "they do the best job of making a show relevant to their market. They do so much planning, all with the retailer in mind. They offer a lot of support to their members.”

About TNNA TNNA is a non-profit trade organization established in 1974 and is dedicated to the advancement and promotion of needle arts, through trade shows, educational seminars, special events, public relations and professional programs that continue to meet the needs of the industry.
