Happy National Craft Month!

By now we’ve surely all read the New York Times article,The Health Benefits of Knitting.* From anxiety and eating disorders, grief counselling, chronic pain management, to creating an overall sense of wellbeing, and many other benefits we’re all well aware of. There are so many reasons we all craft, and someone along the way guided us, introducing us to the wonderful community of knitters, crocheters, and stitchers we’re all a part of. Pass it along, and be sure to mentor someone else in your life – whether it is a friend or neighbor, a coworker, sister, or the barista you see every day. Make it your goal this month to reach out to someone in your community and teach them a new craft.

Retail Survey

TNNA Retailer Survey

The TNNA Retail Survey is up until March 15th! If you sell yarn or yarn related products (bags, needles, notions, wool wash, etc) to consumers then this survey is for you! Whether your store is a brick and mortar LYS, and online shop, and Etsy store, a retail segment of your wholesale company, or you vend at farmers markets and craft fairs – we want to hear from YOU! This survey is by far the most important of the three segments of our State of the Needlearts Industry survey. Our retailers are the glue that holds the industry together, so don’t miss this important opportunity.

Member Outreach

I just returned from Stitches West, where I got to see a lot of our members, and sign up quite a few new ones! One of the things I heard over and over again from potential new members was that they weren’t sure how to go about getting a letter of introduction. Every TNNA member must provide business identification, and one of those is, “Two letters of introduction.” These must be from current TNNA members, but without knowing who is a member or not, it’s hard to know who to ask when you’re a newbie. From indie dyers, new yarn companies, designers, notion makers, farmers, manufacturers, and teachers, these young, new companies are bringing new ideas, and especially new products, to our growing industry. Consider reaching out to your favorite new producers and offer to write them a letter of introduction to TNNA. Or, consider placing a TNNA member badge on your website or blog sidebar!.

Facebook and Forums

We have been asked multiple times for a closed member Facebook group and I think it would be a valuable resource to help us all run our businesses. In order to make it a success, we would need a small group of volunteers with moderator experience to help us draft a code of conduct and to monitor the group.

TNNA Show Update

The deadline for booth contracts is March 14th, so it isn't too late to reserve space and get in the second round of assignments (round one will be those exhibitors who signed up at one of the past shows). Booth assignments start on March 18th, so keep your ringers on, exhibitors!

The retailer’s Buyer Flyer is being formatted now, and you’ll all be getting info shortly on all the events and promotions available to you this June.

I am so excited to be back in DC, the city I call home. Be sure to consider arriving early and staying late to enjoy the free museums, wonderful restaurants, and great local businesses. DC is a very walkable city, and has an extensive public transit system as well. Don’t hesitate to reach out to TNNA or the DC travel bureau with any questions you may have. And, remember, there are THREE airports that serve the DC metro area. National is the closest airport at just 20 minutes from the convention center, but BWI and Dulles are all within an hour’s drive and depending on your originating city may be worth the expense of a car rental, especially if you plan to carpool. The convention center is also easily accessible from the Amtrak station, so if you’re anywhere from Boston to Baltimore, consider taking the train.

Yarn Group is also looking for a few good show volunteers to act as Yarn Group ambassadors at the show. Greet and check in with current members, reach out to potential new members, help manage events during the show, and whatever else comes up along the way.
